Here I present to you two images which contain something that fascinates me.
Below the images is the information about the featured buildings. Mentioning their location, architect, etc. Also a scientific comparison naming the ways to study available for such a comparison.
I decided to choose two completely different projects, because to me they both represent two opposites allround. The skyscraper for the NY Times represents the ultimate form of compact, dense build in a hectic environment with dwellings, industrial and hybrid buidlings. This allways provides a lot of challenges and in this case the architect really succeeded in making an icon where there are allready so much icons around it. Can Labacaho represents to me a safe haven of peace and serenity, in allmost every way possible. The only thing they have in common is that they both are icons in its surroundings.

The floorplan is based on a traditional square plan in the upper tower. The lower floors are in a rectangular shape. |
The floorplan does not contain a simple plan like many other houses. It is a widely spread plan and with the outside teraces the building covers the complete site. This way there is a lot of interaction with the outside world, the climate allows this kind of interaction. |

The shape of the building is not what makes it special. The shape is fairly usual for skyscrapers and that way it fits in into its environment. What makes it different from the rest is the added second facade. The horizontal tubes that run allmost across the complete facade up to the roof and even above the roof. This creates a exiting view that changes during day and night. The lights behind it in the evening create a different composition every single day. |
What makes this building stand out from the rest is its simplicity. The way the rooms look like they have been placed randomly on the site, but it still looks very smooth. The interior and exterior speak "Less is More", this also enhances the quality of the building a whole lot. Its minimalistic style really lets the environment and views be the centre of attention and does not try to compete with it, it might even enhance it. |
| Function: | Function: |
Like the name of the building suggests the tower has been constructed for the New York Times. Therefore the biggest part of the building contains office spaces for the NY Times company. Also Forrest City Ratner Companies and ING real estate are situated in the building occupying office spaces. Also there is an Auditorium and two roof gardens. One on the top of the tower and one one the additonal building. |
The building has been privately constructed for a family. Therefore its only purpose is to be habital for them. But the fact that the function is living it cant be an architectural pleasure to watch it. |

The building is situated in the heart of New York near Times Square. This makes it a very urban environment. The proportions on the site had to be pushed to the limits and the distance to other buildings are near zero. |
It is situated in the quiet town named Jesus in the south-west of Spain. There is allmost no density of buildings in the area what makes it easy and yet hard to create something special. The advantage this place has is that the building is perfectly completed by the view. |
